Why 100 Promises is the Perfect Book for a Book Club
Book clubs are so back baby! While top sellers usually dominate the book club rotation, here’s 10 discussion topics that make Melia Grasska’s 100 Promises the perfect book to add to your book club queue!
Double Entendres – from chapters entitled “Caulks” to “Fin”, Grasska’s book is full of double meanings. The kinds that make you want to grab your friend and say: “did you catch that?”. What were a few of your favorites?
Parental Figures – it’s clear Clayton Jones and Sydney have had two very different upbringings, but how do their parents, and their relationships, affect their individual perspectives on love and family?
City vs. Country – this theme could really not be more obvious throughout the novel, but it also affects each character on a deeper level: with their goals, fears, and aspirations. What were some of the main ways in which these cultural differences impacted their relationship?
Home – the idea of what makes a home, home, is one that’s flirted with periodically throughout the novel. For Sydney, it’s an ever fleeting ideal. For Clayton it’s a sentence. What were the ways in which you felt the concept of “home” impacted the characters and their future?
Vacation – we can’t discuss home without also discussing vacation! A term that’s used almost as an insult throughout, why are vacations such a touchy subject and do they have a right to be?
Small Town Trope – the setting in Melia Grasska’s 100 Promises is no doubt a major contributor to the plot. But is this love story all about fate? Or is it the coincidence of small town life that is the true driving force? And is this a reason why the love triangles and messy relationships are forgiven so easily?
Rings – theres multiple rings in this story (sorry Gollum). What do the differences in rings say about each of the relationships? Do you think that one is more suitable than another? And what about the transformation?
Playlist – not every novel has a playlist, but we do love when they’re there! Is there any depth that can be gained from any of the song choices? And how do the narrators/characters affect the genre of music?
Narrators – speaking of narrators, the dual POVs make 100 Promises a super fun and snappy read, but they also lead to a few inconsistencies. What were some of your faves and least faves? And is one narrator more reliable than another? We’ll get the popcorn while you duke it out!
Seasons – a lot of time certainly passes in this novel. Why do Winter and Spring seem to almost be reversed with their symbolism? And how is this showcased throughout?
