5 Stories that Scream Summer (Without Hitting you over the Head with the Season)
Summer is one of the best seasons and it’s certainly no surprise that artists, authors and filmmakers have all idolized this time of year. And while we’re all for the summer stories, sometimes it’s nice to ease into the season with some subtle summer tales. Here are our five favorite summer stories that get you in the mood, without being too try-hard.
Blue Crush – a summer romance that doesn’t mention the season once, this iconic film from the early 2000s focuses on surfing, athleticism and a Cinderella-style love story. Not to mention it also has a bangin’ sound track. If you’re looking to set the tone for the summer, this is the movie to do it… though we’re pretty sure it takes place in winter.
100 Promises – this novel really brings up all the nostalgia. Jumping through the years via a series of flashbacks, 100 Promises follows a first love’s second chance as the two meet up summer after summer. And while they do wind up seeing each other during Halloween and Christmas as the years go by, they also spend a majority of their time remembering summer. It’s a fantastic paperback to bring with you as you ease your way into the season.
Captain Ron – this cult classic comedy from the early 90s follows a family who sets sails on a rather dodgy boat around the Caribbean. Hilarious, a little dated, and the type of fast paced easy breezy film that we so often miss in our modern day media, Captain Ron is a classic that… also takes place in winter… but is sure to get you in the mood for summer.
500 Days of Summer – this moody RomCom is such an incredible film. And spoiler alert Summer isn’t a season, she’s a woman. The film'‘s reflection on true love and chances lost perfectly blends the hope of the season with the sense of heartfelt longing that comes in the dog days. A must watch for late May!
Endless Summer – this iconic surf documentary had to make our list. Following a group of friends who travel around the world in the mid 1960s this film shares a global perspective in an era where that was practically unheard of. An incredible look at history, culture, and global identity, Endless Summer should be on everyone’s list.
