How to Bust Your Reading Slump!
Reading slumps can happen to the best of us, and unfortunately, there’s no real, solid solution. But we do have a few tips and tricks up our sleeves! Here are our five favorite tips on how to bust a reading slump!
Don’t be afraid to DNF (do not finish) – the idea that every single book needs to be read cover to cover is ludicrous! Not everything is for everyone and sometimes books have surprise twists or tones that you didn’t foresee. If you aren’t liking a book, change it! This is supposed to be fun! Reading is supposed to be fun! It should be like scrolling TikTok, don’t be afraid to flip out of something you don’t like, something better is absolutely waiting for you!
Pick Something You’re Interested In – remember how we just said reading is supposed to be fun? It is! Imagine if every time you opened YouTube you only watched serious educational videos or if you only watched lengthy documentaries when you put on the TV. Just because some books are regarded as “literature” or are deemed “classics” doesn’t mean they’re still entertaining for a modern audience. As philosopher Henry David Thoreau said, “to affect the quality of the day is the highest of arts.” There’s a place and a time for a serious classic just like there’s a place and a time for a black and white documentary. But there’s also space for fun and entertainment. If you’re in a reading slump, you need to prioritize your interests. If you want to read a romance book, read a romance book! If you want to read about space pirates, read about space pirates! When you’re interested in your book, it feels fun and when it feels fun, it’s easy to read!
Short Chapters – modern readers all agree on this main thing: short chapters are everything. They help keep the story moving and don’t make you feel like you need to commit to 40 pages in a single sitting. In 100 Promises by Meliá Grasska, the short chapters are quick and breezy and it makes the read feel manageable.
Try New Authors – just because everybody likes John Steinbeck or Carley Fortune doesn’t mean you have to! If you find yourself dragging through a read or just completely uninspired by an author, try someone new! There’s a lot of fish in the sea and you shouldn’t have to settle for a squid if your thing is lobster.
Multiple POVs/Timelines: Picking a read with multiple narrators and/or timelines is the surefire way to make a book keep your attention. The shift in perspective, the jumps, they help keep the story moving. This is one of our favorite parts about how 100 Promises is structured! Because a lot of times even slow burn romances can feel well… slow. The jumps in time help keep you hooked and are sure to bust your reading slump!
